project title

Literary texts translation — presented within
the series 'Evening with an Author' in Bydgoszcz

duration

December 2008 — October 2009

project type

individual project(in cooperation with Friederike Partsch)

main objectives

Preparing and coordination of work on the translation project within the framework of “Practical translation course” taken by advanced students (from the 6th semester on) of German philology.

The translations of fragments of German literature (part 2 and 3) will be presented during evenings with the texts' authors. For the majority of the audience it was the only way to understand and grasp the artistic value of the original.

Taking part in an authentic, far-flung translation project is an exceptional opportunity for the students to work on texts in a similar way to the professional translators.

Computerlinguistische Modellierung der deutschen Satzstruktur

duration

October 2nd 2006 — Januar 26th 2007

project type

individual project

main objectives

Experimental course in liguistics for students who have completed the introductory courses in linguistics and descriptive grammar (from the 7th semester on). The aim of the course is to introduce a learning environment designed for modelling basic structures of German syntax within the formalisms employed in computer linguistics. The students have the opportunity to develop their knowledge of grammar through modelling some fundamental principles of syntax. They themselves build and test grammars for snippets of the natural language drawing on the formalisms presented to them on the course (phrase structure grammars + specification of morpho-syntactical features).

It is not as much about getting to know a certain grammar formalism as rather inspiring their independent reflection on the structure of language, using the knowledge they already have. The formal method that the students acquire enables them to systematize their knowledge and to develop a descriptively adequate account of syntactic structures. In this way academic theory is linked with practice — the students not only use a foreign language, but they also reflect on its structure and try to discover its principles.
